That was a great show you put on. The speech was fabulous. The introduction, when you had me stand and take a bow, drew a tear to my eye. It brought back so many memories.

Red Tobin, whom I so admired. Len Brown, another little guy like you, who starred in the Cotton Bowl, and was the only Missouri player mentioned, as being all over the field, as a defensive back, and starting quarterback. Brownie, later became a successful horse trainer. Trained for Earl Weaver and me.

Joe McNulty, who put the paddle to your backside, which probably didn't impress you nearly as much as it did the rest of Jackson High School. I think you and Joe Brodsky were caught going off to, or coming back from Cuba - BC. - before Castro, and didn't know what the bidet was in the toilet. Of course, I didn't either at the time.

My daughter,Pam,. enjoyed the show too. We both scoured the paper the next day for a mention of your talk. the Star-Telegram did not have a mention of your name. We were shocked. They mentioned Bell, and the other Coaches, but not one word about Lee Corso, the leading speaker, and in our opinion, the best speaker of the day. Or any day!! The Star-Telegram seems adept at this sort of coverage, but I couldn't believe it. Anyway, Lee, we loved you, and can understand, why you are Mr. ESPN.

Well, the disc Penny promised, didn't arrive today, but it will tomorrow, and after we get it developed, it will get mailed. Give our regards to Betsy and the boys.

Pam's youngest daughter, is getting married in May and has purchased a home near where Joe and Joyce Brodsky once lived out here.

Editor:
I read in your paper that Lee Corso will be the featured speaker at the Fort Worth, MA3 Kickoff Luncheon. I was one of Lee's High School Coaches in 1949.

Roy French, Harry Lee, Red Tobin, Len Brown and me made up the staff. Len went on to become a Texas Aggie Coach. Joe Brodsky, a former Dallas Cowboy Coach, who may be taught Emmit Smith how to dance, was a teammate of Lee's.

Well, I'm the only one left! My 86th birthday will be on December 21, and is the day befor Lee's talk. I would not want to miss either one. Cross your fingers! I am a Purple Heart Marine Veteran of WWII. Lee and I have always been friends. How can I reach him and tell him I'll be there?

The Class of '63 was in the 8th grade, we were learning to walk the path that you had made.

All the Senior boys were heroes and all the girls were Queens. Who can say for sure that those impressions were only young dreams?

Then one day we looked up and everyone was gone. It was up to us to carry on.

To carry on that elusive sprit, the legacy passed from class to class. We wish we had known then that ours would be the last.

The chain really was broken in '63...what once was, never again would be.

I am just putting down Damon Runyon's book "On Broadway" back to the bookcase. It's an old book. My, that man could spin tall tales.

I got to thinking about Opa Locka, where I had a little men's store, named The Dashery. Dean Martin married a little girl from there and was the biggest thing that hit that town until we arrived. Oh, maybe we shouldn't bypass the Old Scandia Restaurant, where me and Kenny Johnson buckled down the door with our parking concession. We also had the Western Union agency and I will never forget the old black lady who wanted to send a wire. It was the shortest wire we ever sent and we told the lady she could get another six words for the same price but she said "no", it was good enough. Her message read "Poppa passed - come."

We lived in Hialeah then and still do. It is a little town that bordered Opa Locka. It housed, arguably, the most beautiful race track in America. Fast Eddie was the change maker for the track and he could flip out change for a hundred dollar bill that would make your head swim. You would walk away from the window knowing you had just beat him out of a twenty, when the truth of the matter was he had just beat you for one. He would tell you to come back after the last race, after he checked out, and if he was over you would get your money back. It never happened. He was never over.

]]> Saturday was the big day at Hialeah and my father-in-law came down to see the flamingos and the big statue of Citation over the lily pond where all of the trainers went on their way to the club house. Old Bill Hildebrand wasn't much of a player but he sure knew how to pick horses. The first day we were there he bet a horse that finished first and I caught him throwing the ticket away. He told me he threw them away because he had bet the horse to show and it won. He came from Bucyrus, Ohio, the world's bratwurst capitol.

He was much better in selecting horses. One day I asked him who his choice was and he told me it was a horse named Quimedito. I said, dad, could you pick something with just a little better chance? The odds on Quimedito were 99 to 1. That's as high as the odds board goes. Well he said number 2 looks pretty good from here. Those were the days before trifectas and perfectas and all that jazz and I was down to my last two dollars anyway.

Well the number 2 horse flew to the front and led all the way around that race track. Quimedito, a 13 hear old gelding, who broke last, continued to pick up horses along the back stretch and turned for home with only the 2 horse in his sights. Needless to say he caught him at the wire. The mutuals were the largest payoff of the season. Quimedito paid over $200.00 to win on the front end. I'm still looking for those kinds of horses, with a big spotted rump and shiny silver dollars on their coat. They don't come often but when they do, bet the farm.

Richard Hernandez, who was on the gymnastics team along with his twin brother Robert, was a fire fighter and the fire department shared the same geographical area as DAVE CREELMAN. DAVE recently told me this lovely memory he has of that era. Their main fire station was on N. W. 27th Avenue and around 63rd Street. DAVE told me he remembers stopping by to see Richard and being invited to diner at the fire station on Key Biscayne. (the Police Department of which DAVE was a member. and fire dept. rotated between the combat zone and Key Biscayne on assignments) They enjoyed a nice meal and remembered happier times.

As you know, Richard was later killed when a fire truck over turned on him on a false alarm call. The fire station on N. W. 27th Avenue and 63rd Street in Miami was named after him.

Not a happy memory but we remember the sacrifice of one of our classmates.

It seems like only yesterday that I was throwing the shot put and he was doing the pole vault.....actually, it was only yesterday!! We competed in the Southeastern Master Track and Field Championships held at Duke University this past week-end.

The Masters is open to people ages 19 - 100, and yes people in their 90's still compete. It's broken down into 5yr age groups, so Richard and I competed in the 60-64 age group. He entered and placed in 5 events, including 1st place in the high jump, 2nd in the javelin and pole vault and 3rd in the shot put and discus. I took 2nd in the shot put (I need more practice).

We're competing again at the Master's Open in Charlotte, NC 6/4/05.

I bought a used one just after graduating from Jackson, and it was my favorite car. I drove a white 1956 Ford while at Jackson and used to park it just North of the physical ed field along the fence. I painted a little football player statue with a "bobble" head to look like a Jackson player and put it on the rear window deck. I painted the number "11" because it was easier to paint than any other number. It happened to be Pat Conway's number. I remember students used to stop behind my car and get a kick out of it. Anyway, maybe someone will remember it and enjoy. I also had a "Miami Jackson Generals" logo football shaped sticker on each side of the rear window. These stickers were provided by First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Miami. They attached to the inside of a window and had the 1962 Jackson football schedule printed on the back. I had an old one in my '63 year book and had several reproduced at a local printing shop. They came out great!. I intend to put one or more of them on my Sprint along with the green and gold yarn dolls hanging from the rear view mirror.

]]> I was too light in weight to make the football team even though I read books on how to tackle, etc. , I attended every game my senior year. What a time! My buddies and I went to the Lakeland game in my '56 Ford and spent the night in a motel after the game. Wild adventure for the first time away from home.

As you well remember, the football team won the Gold Coast Championship our graduating year. I would also like to remind our graduates that the gymnastics team, of which I was a member, also won the Gold Coast Championship with an 11-0 record (they forgot to include my name in the year book index under the gymnastics team page). I also remember that our badmittion (sp?) and swimming team were also state champions. What a great school. I have probably written too much this time but will write more later. Hope everyone joins in.
